Sony's PlayStation sales top 20 million worldwide

0|Edited by Sandra Saweris

At the Game Developers Conference, which is running parallel to Mobile World Congress, Sony has revealed that it has sold 20.2 million PlayStation 4 consoles as of March 1, 2015. Sony claims that the PlayStation 4 has become the fastest-selling PlayStation console in history.
"We are so grateful for the enormous support from PlayStation fans worldwide, and we are truly humbled that gamers around the globe have continued to select PS4 as the best place to play," said Andrew House, President and Global CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment Inc.
"We remain steadfast in our commitment to deliver unique and interactive entertainment experiences powered by the network and the PS4 system's deep social capabilities," he added.
Sony has also detailed its upcoming portfolio of games, which includes highly awaited titles like Batman: Arkham Knight, Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, Bloodborne, Until Dawn, Tearaway Folded and Uncharted 4: Thief's end.
The PlayStation 4 primarily competes with Microsoft's Xbox One console. Unlike previous years, in terms of hardware, development platforms both the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One are very similar.
Despite this, Sony has managed to maintain a lead over the Xbox One in terms of sales. Back in November, Microsoft had revealed it had sold 10 million units of the Xbox One. Of course, there is no doubt that Microsoft would have added to that number significantly, however, the fact that it has still not revealed numbers belies the fact that it still tails the PlayStation.
Both Sony and Microsoft are working over time to evolve their gaming platforms. Sony has announced that its Project Morpheus VR headset will come out in 2016. Microsoft has announced that the Xbox One will be updated to Windows 10.
In the current scenario, the PlayStation business is of high priority to Sony perhaps more so than what Xbox means to Microsoft. It will be interesting to see how things pan out as the perception is that Microsoft has the superior lineup of original content.
